Raising Chicks: Week 7

If you purchased chicks at our Chick Days event, your chicks should be seven weeks old now.

Temp: 70-75 degrees. If chicks are fully feathered, they can move outside.

Feed: Start & Grow Medicated or Non-Medicated - because they are babies, you can free feed them. Fill up their feeders when they are empty. They won't overeat. At this point you can give them some Scratch as a treat.

This week: Ready to move out!

If you have a flock from last year and a new flock, this is a great time to put a fence between them and let them interact. Once they become the same size, give them lots of space and add distractions to the coop - chicken toys, Purina bird block, CDs, lettuce - and they may be introduced. Keep an eye out for the pecking order and if a chicken is bleeding make sure to treat it right away so that it won't be bothered by other chickens. In the photo above, the chick on the right still has a little bit of fuzz and should probably not be left outside at night until it has no baby feathers.

Featured product:
Mealworm Frenzy is very high in protein, so don't give your chicks too much, but this is a great treat for them. If you are trying to train them to go back to their coop, this can help. If you are trying to befriend them (if you haven't been handling them much) this is a good bribe to get them to interact with you.
